If dramatic scenery is what you’re after, start here. September is a lovely time to explore the Lake District without the peak-summer crowds. Head towards Windermere or Keswick, take a boat trip, walk around one of the lakes or find a quiet viewpoint and enjoy the scenery.

For food, expect plenty of cosy pubs, local pies, afternoon teas and hearty Cumbrian dishes. A campsite pitch will often cost around £25–£45 a night, depending on the location and facilities.
